What is 20/20 Vision?

What is 20/20 Vision?

Greetings and welcome to our new series called Eye Knowledge by Dr. Darryl Glover.  This series will breakdown various eye diseases and terminology.  Today, we will tackle the concept of 20/20 vision.  Those who have had an eye exam are most likely familiar with this term.  Below is a dialogue that I experience everyday while saving eyes.

Dr. Glover: Well Mrs. Jane Doe, I hate to inform you that you but you have serve dry eyes, the worst cataracts I have ever seen and a retinal detachment.  It’s imperative that we resolve these problems like yesterday!

Patient: Dr. Glover that was the most thorough examination I have ever encountered. However, I have one question, do I have 20/20 vision?

Dr. Glover: BLANK STARE

Clearly this patient has their priorities mixed up, but believe it or not this dialogue is fairly common day to day. Be honest, have you had this same dialogue with your eye doctor?

American Optometric Association: 20/20 vision is a term used to express normal visual acuity (the clarity or sharpness of vision) measured at a distance of 20 feet. If you have 20/20 vision, you can see clearly at 20 feet what should normally be seen at that distance. If you have 20/100 vision, it means that you must be as close as 20 feet to see what a person with normal vision can see at 100 feet.
